“My midwifery journey began in 2009, after my second baby was born at a birth center run by midwives. I was amazed at the difference between the care I received from the midwives and my previous experience birthing in a hospital. I felt like I had stumbled upon a big secret – that birth can be an empowering, joyful, and intimate experience. Soon after, I decided to see what birth was like from the other side. I trained as a doula through DONA and Birth Arts International, and for four years I attended births as a doula in a variety of settings. My third baby was born at home in 2012. Not long after, I began attending home births as a midwifery apprentice, and I knew that I had found my calling.
After relocating to Phoenix in 2014, I had the opportunity to continue my training under some of the valley’s best midwives. I completed a rigorous apprenticeship, certified through the North American Registry of Midwives and was licensed in the state of Arizona to practice midwifery. Since becoming licensed in 2016, I’ve been busy in private practice and attending births at a freestanding birth center. In January of 2018, Jamie and I took our second trip to Haiti to volunteer our services at a birth center offering free maternity care to Haitian families.”
Lindsay currently lives in downtown Phoenix with her three kids and annoying cat, Cosmo. She enjoys drawing, aerial acrobatics, and traveling to new places. As a former chef, she still loves to cook for her family and friends when she’s not catching babies.
“I attended my first birth, informally, in 2003, when my Aunt invited me to the birth of my cousin. It was a natural, unmedicated birth in the hospital, and I knew then that I had been witness to something truly special. That experience sparked in me a curiosity and drive about maternity care, and I began undergrad work with the ultimate goal of Obstetrics in mind.
The birth of my first child in 2006, in the hospital, was stressful, highly interventive, and left me reconsidering that career plan. In 2010, following the home birth of my second child, I rediscovered my vision for maternity care in the Midwife Model of Care, and in home birth. I promptly started my home birth midwife apprenticeship, newborn daughter in-tow.
I became licensed in 2014, and since have been busy attending births at home, at freestanding birth centers, and assisting my midwife colleagues with births in outside practices.
Lindsay and I began assisting each other in births in 2016, and after two years decided to formally join our practices into one, and Phoenix Home Birth was born!
It has been such a joy to join another strong and talented midwife in practice, and I truly believe we are able to provide even better care as the team we are now. We love our clients, and love how our Phoenix Home Birth family grows and grows each month!
In her free time, Jamie enjoys reading, listening to records, and spending time outdoors. As fifth-generation Arizonan, she appreciates all the beautiful landscapes the state has to offer and likes to take road trips as often as possible. Jamie lives in Phoenix with her children, Jason and Olive, and her cats, Elvis and Carl Sagan Jr.
Meet Lili, our Student Midwife
From an early age I knew that wanted to be part of the birthing world. This idea became clearer to me after I had the opportunity to watch my mother’s best friend give birth to her 5th baby in June of 2011. After graduating high school I began to learn more about home birth and this is when I decided that I wanted to become a Midwife. I began as a student in 2015, when I enrolled in the Via Vita School of Midwifery. Later that year, I moved away from my cold hometown in Alaska, to finish the rest of my schooling in the warmth of Arizona.
I finished Via Vita in early 2017, and am now currently working on the PEP process through the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) to get my certification and licensure. In December 2017, I began apprenticing with Lindsay and Jamie as their student midwife/assistant.
During her down time, Lili enjoys acrylic painting and pottery, going camping with her cats, doing yoga, and weight lifting. She currently lives in East Valley Mesa with her boyfriend Thomas and two cat babies Dexter & Felix. Lili offers Placenta Encapsulation Services to the greater Phoenix metro area. You can find her on instagram at Out of the Womb.
The practice philosophy at Phoenix Home Birth is simple– We know how to give birth; we are powerful and babies are smart. Our bodies are designed to bring forth life with very little intervention, and our babies use their instincts during the labor and first hours after birth to help keep us safe.
We believe that careful, educated, and diligent assessment allows the midwife to interfere less with the birth process, allowing for true empowerment for each birthing person and family. We are here as the guardians of the sacred process of growing and birthing a baby, and acknowledge that as our highest responsibility in life. We are thankful for hospitals and technology when we need them, but we believe that proper guidance, health, care, and assessment makes the need for them less common.
Pregnancy is not a sickness, and birth is not a medical emergency. During pregnancy and labor, a birthing person needs someone with skilled hands and an open heart, and that is what we aim to provide.
